DOING IT RIGHT
GETTING THE BEST FROM OUR HYPNOTHERAPY
Most smokers come to our Wigan hypnosis branch because they want to see a qualified therapist. We also provide a comprehensive service, and part of that is to advise and support our clients every step of the way. Here are some tips to get you started
Prior to your session:
1. Investigate how hypnotherapy works here.
2. Read up on different aspects of stopping smoking from The NSCI Stop-Smoking Handbook.
3. We have six videos, each covering a different aspect of smoking cessation. Time spent watching them will serve you well.
4. Our Wigan hypnotist is going to want to know why you can’t stop smoking. Tell him everything you can think of.
5. Avoid any food containing tomato, from the day of your appointment. The reason is explained elsewhere on this site, but it’s also in our book. If you would like to call us, we’ll also be happy to explain this.
6. If you were a recovering alcoholic, you would not expect people to drink in your home. You are going to be a recovering nicotine addict. The same principle applies.
7. The day after your session, talk to our NSSC AfterCare team, on 01200 40 50 22. It’s this support that makes us different.
8. Many people think it’s a good idea to challenge themselves by socialising and drinking. It isn’t. Tell your friends you are stopping smoking. If you won’t support you they’re not really friends.
9. The day of your session, dispose of any cigarettes you have left.
10. We have already said that support is what sets us apart. If you don’t ask for our help, and you have a problem, you have only yourself to blame. Decide right now that once you have seen our Wigan hypnotist you will call the AfterCare team.
THE NSCI STOP SMOKING HANDBOOK
Here is a small taster from the book. If you are going to come to our hypnotherapist in Wigan, it’s a good idea to read the free sample pages first.
….. Anyway, why does all this stuff about success matter? It matters because smokers have difficulty believing in success.
Time and time again I talk with a patient we have helped and I say it’s good isn’t it, you’ve stopped smoking, and they say well, yes, for now, but who knows what will happen tomorrow or next week?
You do. You really think you don’t know what you are going to do next week? They talk as if smoking is something that happens to them, rather than something they do. They’re talking as if it’s something they have no control over, and remember they have just successfully stopped smoking. And that’s the point. Right now, in the UK, there are perhaps at least fourteen million people who regret that they started smoking (even if they won’t admit they want to stop). I suppose they could be forgiven for thinking that smoking is something that happens to them.
And ex-smokers spend their whole lives wondering if it will happen to them again. Well look here, smoking doesn’t happen to you. Whether you do it again is totally in your control. You will be influenced by things, and you can be sure I shall be talking about those things, but for now I want you to be in no doubt whatever who will be responsible if you start smoking again. You.
I don’t mean you’re useless and you must blame yourself for your own weakness. What I mean is that you have more control than you think, and that’s a good thing, because now what you’re looking at is the fact that it is in your power to decide not to. There are things you can do to ensure that you don’t ever start again.
A SHORT CASE HISTORY
From our Wigan hypnotherapy branch
We are part of The Doctor Richard Mackarness Foundation, which provides a public service without a profit motive. This service is not only for helping people to stop smoking, but also to help people with an alcohol problem. Of course, our subsidiary, National Stop Smoking Centres, is concerned solely with smoking cessation. The fees we charge vary greatly across the country, which is unavoidable, but where possible we do provide a service for people with money constraints. Such issues are not uncommon among smokers, naturally enough.
We are trying to provide a low-cost service in each county, and the one in Lancashire is our Wigan hypnosis branch. The fee here is just £80, which is particularly low, and affordable by almost all smokers. Fees in this part of the country are not high in any case, because it’s not a wealthy area, but what we charge for hypnosis in Wigan is low even by local standards.
Melvyn (not his real name) had had a tough year. He had lost his job and had moved in with his aged parents after his house was repossessed. Many people would say that under these circumstances the last thing he should worry about was stopping smoking. The thinking here is that smoking was the poor chap’s only ‘pleasure’. This is of course not only wrong but it’s patronising. Melvyn was broke but he wasn’t stupid. He knew that smoking was not actually a pleasure. In fact he admitted that he hated it. He also knew that even if it was the cost greatly outweighed any possible benefit. What he hadn’t thought about, but agreed with us when we mentioned it, was that smoking was a weakness. Stopping smoking would demonstrate personal strength. This is a point any smoker should think about.
So Melvyn was pleased that we were able to offer hypnotherapy in Wigan at a fee that he felt was manageable, but he worried a little that this might mean the service was in some way inferior. We assured him that this was just not true. We would never provide a lesser service in order to get our costs down. It would not be ethical, and we just wouldn’t want to do it anyway. In fact Stan Barnes, who is our Wigan hypnotist, is one of our best. He has tremendous experience, and every client in Wigan is treated with the same respect and professionalism as any client, whether they live in Lancashire or central London.
