An issue that often comes up when we’re talking to prospective clients is one of commitment. They say they’re not sure they want to stop smoking – despite calling us about it! There is a great deal of misunderstanding about this issue. If you are thinking of seeing our Lewisham hypnotist, we would ask you to think about what we’re saying here first.

If you have been asking yourself if you want to stop smoking, you have been asking the wrong question. No-one wants to stop smoking. What they want is to be a non-smoker. Think about it, and while you’re doing that ask yourself a better question. Are you glad you started smoking? We already know the answer to that one, don’t we?

So you have a conflict. You wish you had never started, but you’re not sure you want to stop. You should be able to see what the problem is here. The issue is not BEING a non-smoker, it’s BECOMING one.You want to be someone who doesn’t smoke, but you don’t want to go through the process. Now that is quite understandable. What you actually want is for smoking just to go away. Well, that is a bit like wanting a toothache to go away, It will only do that if you go to your dentist. You are only going to be a non-smoker if you go through the stopping process.

So just stop thinking about whether you want to stop. Make your booking with our Lewisham hypnotist, on the clear understanding that once you have stopped you will be pleased you did. Have you ever met anyone who regretted stopping smoking?

From our Lewisham hypnotherapy branch

Lisa rang us about hypnosis, but one of her first statements was that she didn’t really believe in it. The simple response on our part would have been to leave it at that. But why had she rung us in the first place? Saying she didn’t believe in it wasn’t a statement, it was a request. For many people, disbelief is nothing more than an admission that they know nothing about the issue. Lisa wasn’t telling us what she thought, she was asking us to tell her how hypnotherapy works. She just didn’t want to admit she didn’t know. Hence her statement. Well, we could handle that.

This was not a job for our Lewisham hypnotherapist. He sees clients who want to be there, not people who want to be persuaded. In fact we don’t persuade anyone. That’s not our job. We’re here to answer questions, and Lisa’s question was simply how could hypnotherapy help her to stop smoking. Well, we put this information on this website for anyone to read who wants to, but it surprises us how many smokers call to ask rather than read that. We could just have suggested Lisa read the information, but she probably wouldn’t have. In any case, we rather like telling people about it, so we explained it to her.

All Lewisham hypnotists will do the same, so how is our approach different? Well, because we don’t only offer hypnotherapy, but acupuncture as well, we never ‘sell’ any given therapy. Our job is to help each client find the best therapy to help them stop smoking. In Lisa’s case, then it wasn’t just a matter of explaining hypnosis, but looking at why she couldn’t stop, to see if it was right for her. We spent quite a lot of time on the telephone going through her history of trying to stop smoking before we concluded that hypnotherapy was in fact exactly what she needed. The benefit to her of this process was that not only were we sure but so was she. Now, she understood the therapy but she also understood why she needed it. That, believe it or not, is actually quite unusual. Many people having smoking cessation hypnosis in Lewisham do it without any clear idea of why they are doing it.

Because she came into the therapy understanding why she needed it, and what it was going to resolve, Lisa did very well. But is that really necessary? Can smokers simply have hypnotherapy without knowing why? Well, yes, perhaps some of them could. It is not always necessary to understand the therapy you are having. But that would be a bit hit and miss, wouldn’t it. We would of course accept any client at our Lewisham hypnotherapy branch if they really wanted to just do it, but we will always try to help the client take responsibility. Stopping smoking isn’t something we do, it’s what the client does. And taking responsibility was surely a factor in Lisa’s success.

Here is a very small taster:

A definition of dependence

I defined addiction in the last tutorial as a physiological need in the body for a poison that it was forced to adapt to, and I stressed that the addiction cannot be psychological. In other words, it can’t be in your mind.

A simple definition of psychological dependence is that it is everything else. It encompasses every reason you can’t stop smoking, other than your addiction to nicotine.

I want to emphasise before I go any further that you could not become psychologically dependent on smoking if smoking didn’t give you nicotine. Try to imagine a heroin user claiming they love taking heroin because they have a thing about needles. Needles are the delivery method for the drug. They know that and you know it. But when it comes to smoking that knowledge gets reversed. Smokers imagine that what they love is the act of smoking, the lighting of a cigarette and inhaling the product of combustion of tobacco, the gases and tar going down their throat and into their lungs. Psychological dependence produces what psychologists call cognitive dissonance, which means as far as we are concerned here that you know something is not true but you need it to be true so you make yourself believe it.

You know you don’t have a valid argument for why you smoke so you invent one, the main ones being that you are stressed or that you enjoy it. In this Handbook I comprehensively destroy the possibility of either of those beliefs being true, but such is the grip that the addiction to nicotine has on your brain that you will read what I say, nod and say to yourself oh yes, he’s quite right of course, and then you will look for a way to ignore it.

Therapy might not be what you’re looking for. If it isn’t, and you want to take pharmaceutical products to stop smoking, we suggest you see your GP.. You can also visit the Lewisham and Greenwich NHS website here.
