A STOP-SMOKING TIP

Before you arrange to see our Hemel Hempstead hypnotist do make sure this is the right therapy for you. You may know someone who stopped smoking with it, which is good. But that does not necessarily mean it’s right for you. Don’t get us wrong – it probably is. We’re just saying it’s not the right way to make this decision.

Of course, if you’ve stopped before with hypnotherapy, naturally that does mean you should have it again. You should think about why you started smoking again, but at this point we could usefully remind you of our three-year AfterCare support. Use it wisely and it can make a big difference.

You may not have thought about it, but we also provide acupuncture in Hemel Hempstead. If you’re not sure how this works, do click on the link towards the top of this page. Having said that, if you feel you are ready to make an appointment with our Hemel Hempstead hypnotist, then by all means go ahead.

And if you’re still not sure, having read the information we provide about both therapies, then why not call us? We’re here to help, and ensuring that you get the right help matters to us, so you can be confident we will give you good advice.

ANOTHER STOP-SMOKING TIP

If you are like most smokers, you would probably like to know how successful our Hemel Hempstead hypnosis or acupuncture service is. It’s a fair question. It’s not, though, the right question. We could answer it but how would you know if our answer is truthful? You wouldn’t. This is why we don’t answer the question, and it’s why no smoking cessation therapist should. To answer is making a claim, and making a claim you can’t prove is not ethical.

So how, in fact, do we respond to the question? Well, we give what we believe is not only an ethical answer but also a more helpful one. One that actually gives the smoker advice they can use. Our tip to you is to think about this advice.

First, Think about which therapy you need. Coming to see our acupuncturist or hypnotist in Hemel Hempstead because a friend did sounds sensible but is it? Well, of course, up to a point, but before you do that think about why you can’t stop smoking. Does your chosen therapy resolve those specific issues? If you’re not sure, ask for our advice.

Then, make sure any Hemel hypnotist or acupuncturist you book with is both qualified and experienced. Obviously, if you are coming to National Stop Smoking Centres that is a given.

So far so good, but what about support? Far too many people imagine that once they have stopped smoking it’s going to be like they never smoked. That they can just forget about it. That can be and is true in some cases, but sadly not all. It is normal to experience problems, to hit triggers to smoke, at some time. Long-term support is important, so please don’t underestimate it. You will have three years of telephone support and counselling with either therapy. Do use it.

And while we’re on the subject, here is a question for you. How successful have you been stopping smoking with pharmaceutical products? Well, since you’re here, the answer surely is that you haven’t. You may be thinking of therapy as a last resort, but we need to say something about that. Therapy, whichever one, ALWAYS works better than drugs. Do not worry about your past failures. They have nothing to do with the future.

DOING IT RIGHT

TEN TIPS FOR GETTING THE MOST FROM YOUR STOP-SMOKING THERAPY

We want everyone to get the very best from their session at our Hemel Hempstead hypnotherapy or acupuncture branch. Follow these tips and you will help us to help you.

Before you come:

1. Read about hypnotherapy and how it works here. There is also free pages from our book you can read here.

2. Watch the videos here. You don’t have to watch all of them. Just pick those that interest you the most.

Then:

3. At the session, make sure you ask our Hemel Hempstead hypnotist / acupuncturist anything at all. Don’t hesitate – they need to know what you need to know.

4. The day after the session, call the NSSC AfterCare helpdesk, on 01200 40 50 22. Their job is to check that everything is going well. If it is, that’s great. If it isn’t, they will help you to fix it.

5. Avoid tomatoes, and any food containing tomato. If you don’t know why, call us.

6. You might be tempted to go out drinking with friends who smoke. Don’t, until you don’t care about smoking.

7. If you have a smoker in the house, they have to support you. This means a) not smoking in the house, and b) not leaving cigarettes around.

8. Throw away all smoking materials. Why wouldn’t you?

9. Tell your friends you have stopped smoking and get their support.

And after the session:

10. Finally, something we cannot overstate. If you have a problem, call us. If you think you might smoke, call us. If you do smoke, call us. We will never judge you. We’re here to help, and we’re very good at it. Don’t call our Hemel Hempstead hypnotist or acupuncturist, call our AfterCare team, on 01200 40 50 22.

THE NSCI STOP SMOKING HANDBOOK

Before seeing our Hemel Hempstead hypnotherapist or acupuncturist, read some sample pages on our website.
Here is a very small taster:

Stop blaming yourself

It’s an interesting factor in smokers’ motivation, or lack of it, that they blame themselves for the problem. This has the paradoxical effect of making them think well it’s my own fault, I can’t blame anyone else, so that’s that. I’m not sure why people’s belief that it’s their own fault equates to being unable to stop smoking, but it does.

First of all it’s not your fault that you smoke. Smoking is not, contrary to the popular myth, self-inflicted. If you started when you were a child, like most smokers, you were under the age of responsibility and you can blame the adult world for not protecting you from the drug. Once you tried it, you came under its control, so you can blame the authorities who allowed its sale. Once you were addicted, you became psychologically dependent. Alright, perhaps you should have been stronger, but you were what you were and in normal times that hasn’t been a problem, has it? There is, then, a very strong case for not accepting the blame for your smoking.

But in any case, even if it WERE your fault there is a serious error in believing that means that you will only stop smoking when you can get your head round it which isn’t now because you’re not ready, or whatever other reason you give, but as sure as eggs is eggs you can at least convince yourself that because it’s all your fault you have to accept your hopelessness.

So two attitude changes are needed here. First, start blaming other people for the mess you’re in and second, stop allowing yourself to feel a hopeless weakling.
