THE NSCI STOP SMOKING HANDBOOK

Before seeing our Southend hypnotherapist, you might like to read the free sample pages on our website.
Here is a very small taster:

….. Now I’m pretty sure if I asked a heroin user why he couldn’t come off heroin his immediate response would be that he’s addicted to heroin, and he would probably say it in a sarcastic kind of way as if it’s a daft question, which it is. He’s addicted, so he can’t stop taking it. Cause and effect, simple.

Ask a smoker, though, and for some reason that eludes me he is unable to make the connection between being addicted to nicotine and his inability to stop smoking. I’ve been doing this job for more years than is healthy and still I don’t get it, why smokers don’t make the connection. So am I saying that’s it, that addiction is the reason why you can’t stop smoking, pure and simple?

No, I’m not. Addiction, as you will be learning, is far far more important than anyone has ever told you before, whether it’s another stop-smoking book or a professional who should know this stuff. But it is not, on its own, the whole problem. Addiction can be overcome, even without treatment (which now exists) if you just don’t smoke for long enough. I could tell you now that after four days of not smoking, not passive smoking, and not eating tomatoes (tomatoes again, how interesting) you will not be addicted to nicotine, and that will be the end of the problem, except it won’t. What I will be going into in some detail is the psychological dependence that is created by the addiction and why this dependence stops you trying to stop smoking, or scuppers an attempt, or makes you go back to smoking after you have succeeded in stopping.

OTHER SOUTHEND STOP SMOKING RESOURCES

Therapy might not be what you’re looking for. If it isn’t, and you want to take pharmaceutical products to stop smoking, we suggest you see your GP.. You can also visit the Southend-on-Sea Borough Council website here.
